Overview

The cellular immune response is a branch of the adaptive immune system mediated by T lymphocytes, phagocytes, and NK cells. It targets infected or abnormal host cells through direct cell killing or activation of other effector pathways. It is especially effective against intracellular pathogens, cancerous cells, and plays a role in transplant rejection. It provides immunological memory, enabling a faster and more robust response upon re-exposure to the same pathogen.
