Cellular Inhibitor of Apoptosis Protein 2 (cIAP2)

Target
cIAP2
Molecular classification
Inhibitor Of Apoptosis Proteins (IAPS), E3 ubiquitin ligase
01

Overview

Cellular inhibitor of apoptosis protein 2 (cIAP2) is a member of the inhibitor of apoptosis proteins (IAP) family, which are endogenous regulators that suppress apoptotic cell death. cIAP2 is encoded by the BIRC3 gene and is structurally characterized by three baculovirus IAP repeat (BIR) domains at its N-terminus, an ubiquitin-associated domain, a caspase recruitment and activation domain, and a RING finger domain at its C-terminus. These structural features enable cIAP2 to interact with various signaling molecules involved in cell death and survival pathways. cIAP2 inhibits apoptosis primarily through direct binding to and inhibition of caspases and ubiquitin ligase activity. The expression of cIAP2 is transcriptionally upregulated by NF-κB. cIAP2 plays a critical role in modulating innate immune responses. Overexpression or genomic alterations involving cIAP2 have been observed in cancer. Loss or deficiency in cIAP2 increases susceptibility to inflammation-induced tissue damage.
