Cellular Membrane Components

Molecular classification
Lipid, Phospholipid, Membrane component
01

Overview

Cellular membranes, composed primarily of phospholipids with polyunsaturated fatty acid chains, are critical for maintaining cell integrity and compartmentalization. These membranes are vulnerable to damage by reactive oxygen species (ROS), leading to lipid peroxidation, disruption of membrane structure and function, and triggering of cell death pathways like apoptosis and ferroptosis. Oxidized lipids can also act as signaling molecules, modulating inflammation and stress responses. Targeting membrane lipids via ROS generation is a strategy to induce cell death in specific contexts, but requires careful consideration due to potential safety concerns.
