Overview

Cellular membrane disruption refers to the process by which the structural integrity and function of biological membranes—especially the plasma membrane—are compromised. This can occur through mechanical, chemical, or biological means. In living organisms, rapid repair mechanisms involving endomembrane exocytosis and cytoskeletal remodeling are essential for survival after such disruptions; failure in these processes can lead to disease or cell death. In pharmacology and microbiology, many antimicrobial agents—including detergents like Triton X‑100 and antibiotics such as amphotericin B—act via this mechanism by compromising microbial membranes. However, "cellular membrane disruption" is not itself a discrete molecular target but rather a process or outcome affecting various cellular components.[1][3][4]

Mechanism of action

Disruption of lipid bilayer integrity leading to cell lysis or dysfunction[3][4] For antimicrobials/disinfectants: Compromise cell viability by destroying the barrier function of membranes[4]

03

Biological functions

Cell deathSignal transduction (as a consequence of damage)Membrane repair and resealing[1][5]Loss of permeability control[4]

Disease associations

Other (associated with tissue injury, mechanical stress, and diseases resulting from failed repair mechanisms)[1]
05

Safety considerations

Non-specific cytotoxicity due to loss of selectivity for target cells versus host cells[3]Example: Amphotericin B can be toxic to human erythrocytes as well as fungal cells depending on its aggregation state.
