Cellular Membrane Lipids

Cellular membrane lipids are a diverse group of amphipathic molecules that form the structural foundation of all biological membranes. Their primary role is to create a semi-permeable barrier that separates cellular compartments and regulates the movement of substances in and out of cells. The major classes are phospholipids, glycolipids, and cholesterol. They provide barrier function, act as a matrix for proteins, enable compartmentalization, function as a signaling platform, and participate in cell recognition and adhesion. Alterations in cellular membrane lipid composition can affect disease states such as cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, and metabolic disorders.
