Cellular membrane potential maintenance refers to the processes by which cells establish and sustain an electrical potential difference (voltage) across their plasma membrane. This voltage, known as the membrane potential, is essential for numerous physiological functions including nerve impulse transmission, muscle contraction, cell growth regulation, and homeostasis. Key components include the Sodium-Potassium Pump (Na⁺/K⁺-ATPase) and various ion channels (Potassium leak channels, Sodium channels, Chloride channels). The combined action of ion pumps and selective permeability through ion channels establishes distinct intracellular and extracellular concentrations for key ions, generating an electric field. It regulates excitability in neurons and muscle cells, controls cellular responses such as proliferation, differentiation, growth arrest or apoptosis, and maintains osmotic balance.
