Overview

Cellular membranes in coccidian parasites include multiple distinct structures such as the plasma membrane, the inner membrane complex (IMC), and the oocyst wall. The oocyst wall is a bilayered proteinaceous barrier formed during sexual development via secretion of wall forming body proteins and crosslinking by peroxidases, giving it exceptional environmental resilience. The IMC beneath the plasma membrane helps maintain parasite shape and motility. While these membrane structures are integral to pathogenicity and transmission, they are not single therapeutic targets but represent composite features of coccidian cell biology. Some oocyst wall proteins (e.g. EmGam56, EmGam82) may represent putative drug targets if inhibitors for associated enzymes (proteases, peroxidases) can be developed[1][6].
