Target intelligence / Profile preview
Cellular membranes, primarily composed of lipid bilayers and associated proteins, are critical structures that maintain cellular integrity, compartmentalization, and signaling. They are targets for singlet oxygen, a highly reactive form of molecular oxygen generated by photosensitizers upon light activation. Singlet oxygen reacts with unsaturated lipids and proteins, leading to lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation, ultimately disrupting membrane structure and function, and triggering cell death.
Lipid and protein oxidation via singlet oxygen generation, leading to membrane disruption and cell death.
