Targeting cellular mitochondria through the generation of singlet oxygen (¹O₂) is a strategy primarily used in photodynamic therapy (PDT) and related biomedical applications. This approach leverages the unique vulnerability of mitochondria to reactive oxygen species (ROS), particularly singlet oxygen, to induce cell death—most notably in cancer cells. Photosensitizers are often used to generate singlet oxygen locally within the organelle upon irradiation. The subcellular localization of singlet oxygen generation determines the mode and efficacy of cell death, with mitochondrial production typically leading to necrosis.
