Cellular organelle membranes are lipid bilayer structures that surround internal organelles of eukaryotic cells—including nucleus, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, lysosomes, and more. These membranes share several features with the plasma membrane: primarily a phospholipid bilayer with embedded proteins that function in selective transport, signaling, structural integrity, and compartmentalization. Each organelle's membrane possesses unique proteins and lipid compositions suited to its biological role. Some organelles have a single membrane (e.g., endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus) while others have double membranes (e.g., nucleus, mitochondria, chloroplasts). Cellular organelle membranes are not, by themselves, considered drug targets but their integral proteins may serve as such.
