Target intelligence / Profile preview
The cellular redox system refers to the network of molecular pathways and enzymes that regulate the balance between oxidation and reduction reactions within cells. A central component of this system is the generation, regulation, and detoxification of reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS are natural byproducts of cellular metabolism but can also be induced by external factors or specific signaling events. At low physiological levels, ROS act as redox messengers, participating in intracellular signaling pathways. Excessive ROS production leads to oxidative stress and can trigger cell death.
