Overview

Cellular retinoic acid-binding protein 2 (CRABP2) is a small, highly conserved cytosolic protein that binds all-trans retinoic acid (RA), the most active form of vitamin A[1][3][4][5]. Its principal function is to transport RA from the cytoplasm into the nucleus, delivering it to nuclear retinoic acid receptors (RARs) and thereby regulating gene transcription in response to RA signaling[1][3][4]. CRABP2 plays crucial roles in development, especially in tissue-specific cellular differentiation, bone growth, skin homeostasis, and embryogenesis, reflecting RA’s pleiotropic biological activities[1][3][5]. Alterations in CRABP2 expression have been implicated in cancer (including basal cell carcinoma and embryonal carcinoma), accelerated skin aging, and abnormal bone development[1][3][4][5].
