Overview

Central Nervous System (CNS) neural networks are the complex, interconnected populations of neurons and supporting glial cells that facilitate the processing and transmission of information throughout the brain and spinal cord (NIH, 2023). These networks are organized into functional circuits that govern essential biological processes, including sensory perception, motor coordination, and higher-order cognitive functions like memory and emotion (StatPearls, 2023). While not a single molecular target, these networks serve as the functional landscape where drugs interact with specific receptors and ion channels to produce therapeutic effects (Nature Reviews Neuroscience, 2021). Pathological alterations in network architecture or signaling dynamics, often referred to as connectopathies, are implicated in a wide range of disorders, including Alzheimer's disease, epilepsy, and schizophrenia (PubMed, 2022). Consequently, therapeutic interventions often aim to modulate network-wide activity to restore homeostasis rather than focusing solely on isolated molecular components. Understanding the emergent properties of these networks is critical for developing effective treatments for complex neurological and psychiatric conditions.
