Central nervous system prostaglandin synthesis refers to the enzymatic production of prostaglandins—bioactive lipid compounds—in neural tissues. Prostaglandins in the CNS play crucial roles in modulating inflammation, pain perception, fever response, and various neurophysiological processes. The pathway involves phospholipase A2 releasing arachidonic acid from membrane phospholipids, followed by COX-1 and COX-2 converting arachidonic acid into PGH2. PGH2 is then converted into various prostanoids by terminal synthases. It is a target for NSAIDs and is implicated in chronic pain and neurodegenerative diseases.
