Central nervous system tissue (CNS tissue)

Target
CNS tissue
01

Overview

Central nervous system tissue is the major tissue type composing the brain and spinal cord, containing billions of neurons and glial cells organized into distinct regions and layers, with complex connectivity and biochemical properties. It is mapped by anatomical features such as **gray matter** (rich in neuronal cell bodies and unmyelinated axons) and **white matter** (rich in myelinated axons), with further molecular segmentation possible via transcriptomics and spatial gene expression. CNS tissue is not a molecular therapeutic target but rather the context for many targets (receptors, ion channels, enzymes, etc.), and is a site of various pathologies including tumors, neurodegeneration, trauma, and developmental disorders.
