Centrin-1 is a calcium-binding protein encoded by the CETN1 gene, which is a member of the centrin family. It is involved in the structure and function of the microtubule-organizing center, particularly the centrosome. Centrin-1 plays crucial roles in determining centrosome position and segregation, as well as in microtubule severing within the cell. The protein is localized to the centrosome during interphase and relocates to spindle poles during mitosis, corresponding with changes occurring in the cell cycle. It has a notable role in sperm cilia formation and binds calcium ions, participating in associated cellular processes[1][2][5]. Currently, there are no known drug interactions or established roles as a direct therapeutic target. The primary clinical associations are with rare genetic disorders affecting development and visual function[2].
