Centromere-associated protein E (CENPE), also known as Kinesin-7, is a large kinesin-like motor protein essential for proper chromosome movement and alignment during mitosis in human cells. It functions as a physiological homodimer and consists of three main domains: an N-terminal motor domain, a central coiled-coil domain, and a C-terminal tail domain. CENPE plays crucial roles in chromosome congression, kinetochore-microtubule attachment, and spindle dynamics. Mutations in CENPE cause autosomal recessive primary microcephaly type 13 (MCPH13), and defects or depletion can lead to chromosome misalignment and potentially contribute to chromosomal instability seen in cancer cells.
