Overview

Centromere protein C pseudogene 1 (CENPCP1) is a human pseudogene with homology to the centromere protein C (CENPC) gene. Unlike CENPC, which is a well-characterized inner kinetochore protein critical for centromere identity and chromosome segregation during mitosis and meiosis[1][3], CENPCP1 is classified as a non-coding pseudogene and does not encode a functional centromeric protein[4][5]. While some pseudogenes have been identified to exert regulatory functions via their non-coding RNA transcripts, there is currently no evidence to suggest CENPCP1 is involved in disease, drug interactions, or cellular signaling pathways. All known aliases refer specifically to the pseudogene locus without protein or receptor function. The nomenclature may be confused with the functional CENPC gene, which is a true protein involved in centromere activity; care should be taken not to misinterpret CENPCP1 as a classical molecular target. For structured molecular target databases, this entry should be flagged as a pseudogene and not a classical therapeutic target. If the intention was to map a true centromere protein C molecule for functional or therapeutic studies, refer to "centromere protein C" (CENPC), not CENPCP1[3][5].
