Overview

Centromere protein I (CENPI) is a core member of the constitutive centromere–associated network (CCAN) and an essential structural component for proper kinetochore assembly and function during cell division. It is required for chromosome alignment and segregation by promoting recruitment of proteins essential for spindle assembly checkpoint signaling. In addition, CENPI plays a regulatory role in the response of gonadal tissues to follicle-stimulating hormone. Dysregulation and overexpression of CENPI have been linked to enhanced cell migration, invasion, and specific disease processes, especially in cancers and X-linked gonadal development disorders. It is not a classical receptor, enzyme, or transporter but is critical for genome stability via its role in mitosis and centromere function.
