Centromere protein W (CENPW) is a structural component of the kinetochore complex at centromeres, the specialized chromosomal sites that are essential for correct chromosome segregation during mitosis and meiosis[2]. CENPW is a part of a subcomplex comprised of CENP-T and CENP-S/X/W, which together form a major interface for spindle microtubule attachment by organizing the outer kinetochore. Proper function of CENPW is crucial for the fidelity of chromosome segregation, and its deregulation or overexpression has been associated with increased cell proliferation and oncogenesis, as indicated by its alternative designation as "cancer up-regulated gene 2" in some databases[2]. There are no known approved therapeutics targeting CENPW directly, and it is not yet an established drug target, but its role in cancer and chromosomal instability suggests potential value for cancer research and as a prognostic biomarker.
