CEP85
Molecular classification

Overview

Centrosomal protein of 85 kDa (CEP85) is a coiled-coil domain-containing, centrosome-associated protein essential for efficient centriole duplication and cell cycle progression. It directly interacts with STIL to promote the early steps of centriole formation and modulates PLK4-driven cytoskeletal rearrangements and cell motility. Additionally, CEP85 acts as a negative regulator of the NEK2 kinase, maintaining centrosome integrity in non-dividing cells and suppressing centrosome disjunction. Mutations in CEP85 are linked to primary autosomal recessive microcephaly, highlighting its importance in neurodevelopment. There are currently no known drugs targeting CEP85, and it is not considered a therapeutic target in clinical practice.
