Overview

Ceramides are a class of lipids that are essential components of the skin barrier, particularly within the stratum corneum. They constitute approximately 50% of the total lipid content in this layer and play a critical role in maintaining skin integrity, hydration, and protection against environmental aggressors. A decrease or imbalance in ceramide levels leads to impaired barrier function, resulting in increased water loss, susceptibility to infections/allergens, inflammation, irritation, or chronic conditions like atopic dermatitis or psoriasis. Topical application or supplementation with formulated ceramides can help restore damaged barriers.
