Cerberus 1, DAN family BMP antagonist (CER1), is a secreted cytokine and member of the cysteine knot superfamily that functions predominantly as a protein antagonist of bone morphogenetic protein (BMP), WNT, and Nodal signaling pathways[1][2][3]. CER1 plays a vital role during embryonic development, particularly in anterior-posterior patterning, head and heart induction, and establishment of left-right body axis. It achieves these functions by binding and inhibiting multiple growth factors, thereby shaping the development of craniofacial structures, neural tissue, and cardiovascular system. CER1 is expressed in the anterior visceral endoderm and its regulation is tightly linked to critical embryological events. Mutations or altered expression of CER1 are associated with congenital syndromes, altered bone mineral density, and possibly tumor biology, although no currently approved drugs target this molecule directly[1][2][3].
No therapeutic agents targeting CER1; its mechanism is endogenous BMP, Nodal, and WNT pathway antagonism.
