Regulation is achieved through autoregulation and chemical control, mainly through carbon dioxide levels. Disruption can lead to ischemia or stroke. The unique structure—including collateral pathways like Circle of Willis—provides some protection against localized vascular blockages by allowing alternative routes for blood flow.
