Cerebral endothelial cell adhesion molecule (CERCAM)

Target
CERCAM
Molecular classification
Cell adhesion molecule, Other (possible member of glycosyltransferase 25 family, functionally likely inactive as transferase)

Overview

Cerebral endothelial cell adhesion molecule (CERCAM) is a probable cell adhesion protein expressed at the brain endothelium, where it is involved in mediating leukocyte transmigration across the blood-brain barrier. It is predicted to be located at the plasma membrane and is involved in cell-cell adhesion processes. Unlike many glycosyltransferases, CERCAM does not display enzymatic activity in vitro. Its expression and function are thought to contribute to immune cell entry into the CNS under physiological and pathological conditions. In cancer, upregulation or altered expression of CERCAM and other cell adhesion molecules in the brain may facilitate tumor cell adhesion, migration, and eventual brain metastasis, making it a potential, though not yet validated, therapeutic target in neuro-oncology and neuroimmunology[6][7][8][1].
