Overview

Cerebral metabolism refers to the complex set of biochemical processes that provide energy to the brain, primarily through the oxidation of glucose and oxygen to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP) (StatPearls, Physiology, Cerebral Blood Flow and Metabolism). Despite representing only about 2% of body weight, the brain consumes approximately 20% of the body's total oxygen and glucose, reflecting its high energy demands for maintaining ion gradients and synaptic transmission (NIH, Brain Energy Metabolism). Dysregulation of cerebral metabolism is a hallmark of various neurological conditions, including neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's, where glucose hypometabolism is often observed, and acute injuries like stroke or trauma (PubMed, Glucose metabolism in Alzheimer's disease). While not a single molecular target, modulating cerebral metabolism involves targeting specific enzymes, transporters (e.g., GLUT1), and mitochondrial pathways to restore energy balance or protect neural tissue (Journal of Cerebral Blood Flow & Metabolism).
