Galactosylceramide sulfotransferase (GAL3ST1) is an enzyme responsible for the transfer of sulfate groups to position 3 of non-reducing beta-galactosyl residues in glycerolipids and sphingolipids, resulting primarily in the synthesis of galactosylceramide sulfate (sulfatide)[1][2][3][6][9]. Sulfatide is a major lipid component of the myelin sheath in the central and peripheral nervous systems and seminolipid in the male reproductive system[1][9]. GAL3ST1 acts chiefly on galactosylceramide and related glycolipids, and dysfunction can potentially contribute to myelin-related pathologies. Activity of this sulfotransferase is increased in renal cell carcinoma[3]; therefore, it may serve as a biomarker for certain cancers and neurological disorders. GAL3ST1 is encoded on chromosome 22q12.2, and its canonical protein product consists of 423 residues[1][4].
