Cerebrospinal fluid volume refers to the quantitative amount of CSF present in the ventricles, subarachnoid space, and central canal of the CNS. Normal adult CSF volume ranges from approximately 125–150 mL, but variations occur with age and pathological states including hydrocephalus (increased volume) and cerebral atrophy (age-related increase)[5]. CSF volume is critical for CNS buoyancy, cushioning, metabolic waste clearance, homeostasis, and protection from injury[1][3][4][5][6]. Measurement of CSF volume is clinically important as fluctuations are central to many neurological diagnoses and management strategies[5][7]. However, CSF volume itself is not a molecular entity or direct therapeutic target, but rather a physiological parameter influenced by CSF production, circulation, and absorption mechanisms involving the choroid plexus, ependymal cells, and arachnoid granulations[2][4][5][6].
