Ceruloplasmin (CP)

Target
CP
Molecular classification
Glycoprotein, Multicopper oxidase, Enzyme
01

Overview

Ceruloplasmin is a blue, copper-containing glycoprotein primarily synthesized in the liver. It serves as the major copper-carrying protein in human blood and plays essential roles in both copper and iron metabolism. It functions as a multicopper oxidase (ferroxidase), catalyzing oxidation reactions involving iron (Fe²⁺ to Fe³⁺) and other substrates. It also plays an antioxidant role and is involved in iron metabolism by facilitating iron mobilization. Ceruloplasmin expression is regulated during inflammatory states and its levels are diagnostic markers for Wilson and Menkes diseases.
