Cerumen

Molecular classification
Lipid Mixture, Wax, Biological Secretion
01

Overview

Cerumen, commonly known as ear wax, is a naturally occurring substance produced in the human external auditory canal by ceruminous and sebaceous glands. It is composed of a mixture of lipids (including fatty acids, cholesterol, and squalene), keratin, shed skin cells, and other debris. Cerumen provides protection against pathogens and debris, lubricates the ear canal, and contributes to its self-cleaning mechanism. Excessive accumulation can lead to impaction and associated symptoms.

Other names
