Overview

The cervical and vaginal mucosa refers to the epithelial lining and associated mucus layers covering the cervix and vagina. This mucosa is characterized by secreting complex mucus (mainly mucins such as MUC5B, MUC5AC, and others), which forms a selective, semi-permeable barrier that lubricates tissue, supports the vaginal microbiota, and provides immune protection against pathogens. The mucosa also modulates during the menstrual cycle, supporting sperm passage during ovulation but generally preventing pathogen entry by acting as both a physical and biochemical barrier. Disruption of mucosal integrity or mucus composition is associated with increased risks of infection, preterm birth, and other reproductive health issues.
