Overview
The cervix is the lower, narrow portion of the uterus that connects the uterus to the vagina. It is composed of fibromuscular and glandular tissues, lined by both squamous and columnar (glandular) cells. Its primary roles include facilitating the passage of menstrual blood, allowing sperm entry into the uterus, protecting the upper genital tract from infection via mucus production, and opening/dilating during childbirth. The cervix is central to reproductive health and is the site where cervical cancer arises, most commonly due to persistent infection by oncogenic human papillomavirus (HPV) types.
