Overview

Cervical epithelial cells form the lining of the uterine cervix and are subdivided into different types: stratified squamous epithelial cells in the ectocervix (facing the vagina) and simple columnar mucous cells in the endocervix (facing the uterine cavity)[3]. These cells form tight, adherens, and desmosomal junctions that maintain the mucosal barrier, help secrete mucus, and are involved in both physical and immunological defenses against pathogens[1][2][4]. Cervical epithelial cells regulate local immune responses by releasing cytokines, chemokines, and antimicrobial peptides and interact with underlying immune populations[2][4]. Dysfunction or transformation of these cells underlies infectious syndromes (e.g., cervicitis), barrier failure (permitting pathogen entry), and the origins of cervical neoplasia and cancer[5]. Summary: "Cervical epithelial cells" denotes a biologically important cellular population crucial for mucosal defense and cervical health, but it is not a molecular target in the sense of a receptor or enzyme and is thus not appropriate for inclusion in gene/protein/drug target databases except as tissue or cell-type context[2][4][5].
