The cervical mucosa is the specialized mucous membrane lining the uterine cervix, comprising both the endocervical columnar epithelium and the ectocervical stratified squamous epithelium (StatPearls, Anatomy, Abdomen and Pelvis, Cervix). It serves as a vital physiological barrier and a gatekeeper for the upper female reproductive tract, regulating the passage of sperm and protecting against pathogenic invasion through the secretion of cervical mucus (NIH, StatPearls). The properties of this mucosa and its secretions are highly sensitive to ovarian steroids; for instance, progesterone induces the formation of a thick, viscous mucus plug that acts as a contraceptive barrier (PubMed, PMID: 25448255). In clinical pharmacology, the cervical mucosa is a key site for the action of hormonal contraceptives and a target for topical microbicides and spermicides (NCBI, Bookshelf). Furthermore, the transformation zone within the cervical mucosa is the primary site for the development of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and cervical cancer, typically associated with chronic high-risk Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection (World Health Organization, Cervical Cancer). Because it is an anatomical tissue layer rather than a specific protein or molecule, it is generally classified as a drug delivery site or a physiological barrier rather than a discrete therapeutic target molecule.
