Cervical Mucus

Molecular classification
Biological Secretion, Hydrogel
01

Overview

Cervical mucus is a hydrogel-like secretion produced by the glands of the cervix. It plays critical roles in reproductive physiology, acting as both a barrier and facilitator within the female reproductive tract. Its composition includes water, mucin glycoproteins, lipids, fatty acids, proteins, immunoglobulins, and trace metals. The mucus's physical properties and biological functions change throughout the menstrual cycle in response to hormonal fluctuations, affecting sperm transport and pathogen protection. Abnormalities can indicate infertility or disease.
