Cervical Mucus (Thickening)

Overview

Cervical mucus is a gel-like secretion produced by the glands of the cervix. The thickening of cervical mucus refers to its transition from a thin, stretchy, and slippery state (which facilitates sperm movement) to a thicker, stickier, or drier state that acts as a barrier to sperm. This process is primarily regulated by estrogen and progesterone levels throughout the menstrual cycle. While thickening is a normal part of the post-ovulatory phase, persistently abnormal thickness can, rarely, contribute to infertility.

Mechanism of action

Progestins increase cervical mucus thickness, forming a barrier to sperm penetration. Clomiphene may, in some cases, thicken cervical mucus.
