Cervical mucus production is a hormonally regulated physiological process in which the epithelial and glandular cells of the cervix secrete a glycoprotein-rich fluid (mucus) whose quality and abundance change throughout the menstrual cycle. Estrogen stimulates production of clear, stretchy, “egg white” mucus shortly before ovulation to facilitate sperm movement, whereas progesterone thickens and reduces mucus production after ovulation to limit sperm and pathogen entry. Cervical mucus also plays immunomodulatory and antimicrobial roles, protecting against vaginal pathogens and contributing to reproductive tract health. Disrupted mucus production can contribute to infertility and increase susceptibility to infections, and is a key target of some contraceptive drugs.
