Overview

Cervical nerves are eight paired nerves (C1–C8) originating from the cervical spinal cord. They exit the vertebral column via intervertebral foramina and innervate the head, neck, shoulders, arms, and diaphragm. Each nerve transmits motor (movement) and sensory (sensation) signals; specific nerves govern particular muscles and skin regions (dermatomes, myotomes). Compression or injury to a cervical nerve can cause pain, weakness, numbness, or loss of function in its respective region. These nerves are critical for the control of breathing (via the diaphragm—phrenic nerve), neck movement, and upper limb function
