Overview

CFAP44 antisense RNA 1 (CFAP44-AS1), also known as WDR52-AS1, is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) expressed primarily in the testis and plays a regulatory role in the expression of the nearby CFAP44 gene, which encodes a protein essential for the formation and function of flagella and cilia in sperm[1][2][3][4][6][7]. Expression of CFAP44-AS1 is positively correlated with sperm motility and normal morphology; reduced levels are observed in men with infertility characterized by asthenozoospermia (reduced sperm motility) and terato-asthenozoospermia (abnormal sperm shape)[1][2][4]. Its deregulation is considered an important factor that may contribute to male infertility, suggesting a specialized role in reproductive biology rather than as a classic therapeutic target[1][2][4]. There is currently no evidence for targeting CFAP44-AS1 with drugs, and it is not classified as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or similar therapeutic target.
