Overview

CFAP61 antisense RNA 1 (CFAP61-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA transcribed from the antisense strand of the CFAP61 locus[3]. Antisense lncRNAs in general can regulate the expression of their sense gene partners through various mechanisms, such as RNA-RNA duplex formation, modulation of chromatin state, or interference with transcription, but specific molecular functions or clinical relevance for CFAP61-AS1 remain uncharacterized in the scientific literature as of September 2025[3][2]. There is no evidence that CFAP61-AS1 is currently considered a disease biomarker or therapeutic target. The CFAP61 gene encodes a protein essential for normal sperm flagellar structure and function; mutations in CFAP61 cause MMAF and male infertility[1]. However, this is distinct from its antisense RNA, CFAP61-AS1, which does not encode a protein[3]. Antisense lncRNAs are known to participate in diverse regulatory roles, but for many individual lncRNAs, including CFAP61-AS1, there is no detailed functional or disease-association evidence available[2][3]. No reports exist of interacting drugs or therapeutic interventions targeting CFAP61-AS1, nor is it listed as a biomarker or implicated in safety concerns to date[3].

Disease associations

No direct published disease association for CFAP61-AS1 itself as of 2024Its sense gene (CFAP61) is associated with male infertility (Multiple Morphological Abnormalities of Sperm Flagella, MMAF)
