Chaperonin containing TCP1 subunit 8 like 2 (CCT8L2) is a protein-coding gene that produces a subunit of the chaperonin-containing TCP1 complex (CCT), a large cytosolic molecular chaperone complex essential for ATP-dependent protein folding. The CCT complex consists of eight different subunit species, each with substrate-specific roles in folding in vivo[7]. CCT8L2 is closely related to the “theta” subunit (CCT8) and is predicted to assist folding of actin, tubulin, and potentially other cytosolic proteins. It is primarily involved in general proteostasis and cellular function via protein folding, and may contribute to spermatogenesis as part of CCT complex function[2][3][4][5][7][6]. No therapeutic drugs are known to act on CCT8L2, and disease associations derive mainly from the general significance of the chaperonin system, rather than this specific subunit. CCT8L2 is not currently considered a direct therapeutic target.
