Overview

CHEK2 pseudogene 1 (CHEK2P1) is a non-functional DNA segment closely related to the CHEK2 gene. While the CHEK2 gene encodes checkpoint kinase 2—a serine/threonine kinase essential for cell cycle checkpoint control, DNA repair, and tumor suppression—CHEK2P1 does not produce a functional protein. Because of high sequence homology, CHEK2P1 can be amplified in genetic studies by accident and confound CHEK2 variant analysis[5]. Pseudogenes such as CHEK2P1 can be mistaken for their parent gene and are generally not considered therapeutically relevant[4][5]. CHEK2P1 should not be confused with **CHEK2 (checkpoint kinase 2)**, whose protein product plays a critical role in the DNA damage response and is a validated biomarker and disease-associated gene for multiple cancers[1][2][3][5][6].
