Overview

Chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 21 (CCL21) is a small cytokine belonging to the CC chemokine family. It primarily functions as a homeostatic chemokine involved in immune cell trafficking, guiding CCR7-expressing leukocytes—such as naïve T cells and dendritic cells—to secondary lymphoid organs. CCL21 is essential for accumulation of developing thymocytes and critical for central self-tolerance establishment among T cells. It is constitutively produced in secondary lymphoid organs and expression increases during inflammation. CCL21 interacts with the receptor CCR7 triggering signaling pathways leading to cellular responses including migration/chemotaxis.
