Overview

Chemokine (C-X-C motif) ligand 13 (CXCL13) is a small secreted chemokine involved in B lymphocyte chemotaxis and organization of B cells within lymphoid follicles. CXCL13 interacts with its receptor, CXCR5, to selectively attract B cells to particular tissues, influencing the structure and function of secondary lymphoid organs. CXCL13 expression serves as a biomarker for certain lymphoid malignancies and autoimmune conditions, and elevated levels have been linked to disease activity and prognosis in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and some cancers. Although direct drug targeting is not yet clinically available, modulating the CXCL13 axis is an active research area, with implications for treating immune-driven diseases. Safety considerations for future therapies include monitoring for immune dysfunction and unwanted effects on lymphoid tissue architecture.
