Overview

Chemokine (C-X-C motif) ligand 7 (CXCL7), also known as pro-platelet basic protein (PPBP), beta-thromboglobulin, and connective tissue-activating peptide III, is a platelet-derived cytokine and growth factor of the CXC chemokine family. Released in large amounts from platelets upon activation, CXCL7 functions as a potent chemoattractant and activator of neutrophils, stimulating several cellular processes such as DNA synthesis, cell division, metabolism, prostaglandin E2 secretion, and extracellular matrix production. It also enhances the secretion of plasminogen activator by synovial cells and exhibits direct antimicrobial properties. CXCL7 is clinically relevant in the context of inflammatory diseases and thrombotic disorders, and its plasma concentration serves as a biomarker for platelet activation and risk of thrombotic events.
