Chemokine C-C motif ligand 11 (CCL11), also known as eotaxin-1, is a small cytokine belonging to the CC chemokine family. It functions primarily as a chemoattractant for eosinophils, playing a crucial role in allergic responses and inflammation. CCL11 binds to CCR3, its primary receptor, which is highly expressed on eosinophils, inducing their migration and activation. It is produced by various cell types, including epithelial cells, fibroblasts, and immune cells, in response to inflammatory stimuli. Elevated levels of CCL11 are associated with several diseases, including asthma, aging-related cognitive decline, psychiatric disorders, and neurodegenerative conditions, making it a potential biomarker and therapeutic target.
