Chemokines are a large family of small, secreted cytokines with the central biological function of inducing directed movement (chemotaxis) of immune cells, especially leukocytes. They act by binding to G protein-coupled chemokine receptors expressed on target cells, activating intracellular signaling and promoting migration to sites of infection, inflammation, or tissue development. Chemokines are further classified by their function (homeostatic or inflammatory) and their conserved structural motifs. The term "chemokine induction" refers broadly to the upregulation and secretion of chemokines by cells in response to immune or inflammatory stimuli—not a specific molecule or receptor—and thus should not be used as a target name.
