Chemokine-like protein TAFA-2 (TAFA2) is a small secreted protein belonging to the TAFA family, which consists of five highly homologous genes encoding small, brain-predominant proteins with conserved cysteine residues[1]. TAFA2 is distantly related to C-C motif chemokines such as MIP-1α but is more accurately classified as a chemokine-like or neurokine molecule[1][2][7]. It is predominantly expressed in specific brain regions, where it acts as a neurotrophic factor involved in neuronal survival and neurobiological processes[1][2][7]. In addition, TAFA2 has been shown to regulate immune and nervous system cells, suggesting roles in both neurobiology and immune modulation[1][5]. Dysregulation or mutations in TAFA2 have been associated with neuropsychiatric disorders including certain forms of schizophrenia[1]. There is emerging evidence for its involvement in cell migration and recruitment, making it relevant for regenerative medicine contexts[5]. No approved drugs, mechanisms of action, biomarkers, or documented safety concerns specific to TAFA2 have been reported in available sources.
