Overview

Chemokine-like protein TAFA-3 (TAFA3, FAM19A3) is a small secreted protein, distantly related to the CC-chemokine family, and is part of the TAFA/FAM19A family. It is predominantly expressed in specific brain regions and is proposed to function as a brain-specific chemokine or neurokine, acting as a regulator of immune and nervous cells. TAFA-3 is involved in the regulation of microglia polarization and neuroblast differentiation, linking it to essential neuroimmune and developmental processes. Disruption in TAFA3 function in animal models results in altered social behavior, impaired communication, and increased repetitive behaviors, suggesting a key role in brain physiology and possibly in neuropsychiatric diseases[1][2][5][6][8].
