Molecular classification
Receptor, Ionotropic Receptor, Metabotropic Receptor, G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR)
01

Overview

Chemosensory neuron receptors are specialized proteins expressed on the surface of chemosensory neurons, enabling these cells to detect and respond to environmental chemical cues such as odorants, tastants, and pheromones. These receptors play a critical role in translating external chemical signals into neuronal activity that drives behavioral responses like attraction or avoidance. They can be ionotropic (ligand-gated ion channels) or metabotropic (typically GPCRs) and initiate signal transduction pathways upon binding specific ligands. Each type of chemosensory neuron expresses a unique combination of receptor genes that determine its sensitivity profile. Receptor expression is dynamically regulated by sensory experience.
